Robert Kwame ‘Bob J’ Johnson was a Ghanaian Cinematographer who was recognized as Ghana’s best cinematographer. He worked on several top rated Ghanaian films such as Perfect Picture (2009), A Sting in a Tale (2009), Check Mate (2010) Scorned (2008) 6 Hours to Christmas (2010), all directed by Shirley Frimpong-Manso; Kwaw Ansah’s The Good Old Days: The Love of AA (2010); Kwaku Sintim-Misa’s (KSM) Double (2009); 4Play Reloaded (2011) produced by Abdul Sallam 〔(【引用サイトリンク】url=http://m.modernghana.com/music/14313/3/actors-boycot-sets-to-bury-bob-j.html )〕 and Masquerades (2011) which was Bob J’s last film he worked on before his demise directed by Belgian director, Xavier Arjis and written by Lydia Forson. == Biography == Robert Johnson popularly known as ‘Bob J’ was an old student of NAFTI. He worked in the camera department on international productions in the USA and the UK. Unfortunately, he met his untimely death on Sunday morning 12 December 2010 when he was allegedly training some soldiers how to ride motor bikes in Aburi. Bob J has left with him his wealth of experience and knowledge in cinematography, which would have substantial change the film industry. His death shocked and wounded the hearts of many in the film industry. Ace filmmaker Shirley Frimpong-Manso who worked with Bob J on several occasions shared her views on Ace cinematographer’s life on ghanacelebrities.com, “Bob was meticulous, professional, creative, a strong pillar of reliability and above all a big brother and this can be attested by all those who had the privilege to work with him. He was full of life and Great Spirit on and off set; it will never be the same without him.” Bob J was appreciated in the film industry both by on screen performers and behind the scenes personnel so much so that some film production companies halted production purposely for Bob’s funeral. In 2012, the Ghana Academy of Film and Television Arts (GAFTA) instituted an award for Best Cinematography at the 20th NAFTI Students Film Festival which was named after him, The Robert Johnson Silhouette Award. The award has been given out twice at the same festival in 2012 and 2014.
